CHENNAI: As the city recovers from the floods that ravaged Chennai late last year, repair work on Saidapet Bridge is under way. The state highways authority has begun replacing the parapet walls that were damaged during the flood and has also undertaken repair work where there were only minor damages.
Officials say that the structural integrity of the bridge has not been damaged and only superficial repair work is required.

“We checked the bearing (the portion between the pillars and the carriage) for its strength. There is no problem as it was replaced only five years ago,” said an engineer from the construction and maintenance wing of the department. “These bearings have a long life period and are at no risk for now,” he added.
The repairs will cost Rs 8 lakh and will be completed in two weeks.
